Best Hockey Bags 2026/27 — Stick Bags, Rucksacks & Holdalls
Share
Choosing the right hockey bag comes down to how much kit you carry, how you travel to training and matches, and whether you want one bag that does everything or separate bags for different purposes. Here's a breakdown of every type and what to look for.
Types of Hockey Bag
Stick Bags
Stick bags are the most common type of hockey bag — a long holdall or backpack-style bag designed to carry one or more sticks alongside your kit. They come in single-stick and double-stick versions, and range from basic nylon bags to thermally lined premium options that protect your stick from heat and cold.
Best for: Players who want a dedicated bag for their stick and match-day kit.
Rucksacks & Backpacks
Hockey rucksacks and backpacks are increasingly popular — they're easier to carry on public transport and fit in lockers more easily than long holdalls. Most hockey-specific rucksacks have an external stick holder or internal stick sleeve. Capacity ranges from around 25L (compact) to 40L+ (large).
Best for: Players who commute to training or want a bag that doubles as a school/work bag.
Holdalls & Kit Bags
Large holdalls carry everything — stick, boots, kit, water bottle, and more. Less practical for commuting but ideal if you drive to matches and want everything in one place. Goalkeeper holdalls are extra-large to accommodate GK kit.
Best for: Players who drive to matches and carry a lot of kit.
Goalkeeper Bags
Goalkeeper bags and holdalls are extra-large to fit kickers, legguards, body armour and a helmet alongside a stick and playing kit. If you're a goalkeeper, a standard stick bag won't cut it.
What to Look For
Stick Storage
Check how the bag carries your stick — internal sleeve, external holder, or open-top. Thermally lined stick compartments protect your stick from temperature extremes, which matters if you leave your bag in a hot car.
Capacity
Think about everything you carry: stick, boots, shin pads, gloves, gumshield, water bottle, change of clothes. A 30–35L bag is comfortable for most outfield players. Goalkeepers need 50L+.
Durability
Look for reinforced base panels (the bag will spend a lot of time on wet pitchside surfaces), strong zips, and padded shoulder straps if it's a rucksack.
