Hockey Stick Carbon Content Explained
Carbon content is one of the most talked-about specs in hockey sticks — but what does it actually mean, and how much does it matter? Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Carbon Content in a Hockey Stick?
Modern field hockey sticks are made from composite materials — typically a combination of carbon fibre, fibreglass, aramid (Kevlar), and resin. The carbon content percentage refers to how much of the stick's construction is made up of carbon fibre, and it has a direct impact on how the stick feels and performs.
Carbon fibre is extremely stiff and strong for its weight. The more carbon in a stick, the stiffer it becomes — and stiffness is what drives power transfer. When you hit or push the ball, a stiffer stick flexes less, meaning more of the energy from your swing goes directly into the ball rather than being absorbed by the stick itself. This is why high-carbon sticks feel more powerful and explosive.
The trade-off is feel and forgiveness. A very stiff, high-carbon stick transmits more vibration back through your hands on every contact — which can be uncomfortable for players without established technique, and makes the stick less forgiving of mishits. Lower carbon sticks absorb more of that vibration, giving a softer, more forgiving feel that's easier to control for developing players.
What Do the Percentages Actually Mean?
Carbon content in hockey sticks typically ranges from around 5% at the entry level up to 100% at the very top of the market. Here's a rough guide to what each level means in practice:
Under 30% Carbon — Beginner and Junior
Sticks in this range are predominantly fibreglass with a small amount of carbon added for structure. They're lightweight, flexible, and very forgiving — ideal for beginners, young juniors, and players who are just learning the basics of the game. The softer feel makes ball control easier and reduces the sting of mishits. The trade-off is less power on hits and pushes compared to higher-carbon models.
Best for: Complete beginners, under-10s, and players in their first season of club hockey.
30–60% Carbon — Developing Club Players
This is the sweet spot for most regular club players. Sticks in this range offer a meaningful step up in power and responsiveness compared to entry-level models, while still retaining enough flex to be forgiving and comfortable to play with. Players in this range will notice a real difference in the power behind their hits and the crispness of their passes compared to a low-carbon stick.
Best for: Juniors who play regularly, adult beginners stepping up from their first stick, and club players who train once or twice a week.
60–85% Carbon — Serious Club Players
Sticks in this range are noticeably stiffer and more powerful than mid-range models. They reward clean technique with explosive power and a very responsive feel, but they're less forgiving of poor contact — mishits will sting, and the vibration through the hands is more pronounced. Players at this level typically have established technique and are competing regularly at club level.
Best for: Regular club players, county-level players, and anyone who trains seriously and wants more from their stick.
85–100% Carbon — Elite Performance
At the very top of the market, sticks with 85% carbon and above are built for elite players who demand maximum power, precision, and responsiveness. These are the sticks used by international players and serious club athletes competing at the highest levels. They're extremely stiff, very powerful, and completely unforgiving of poor technique — a mishit with a 95% carbon stick will let you know about it. The feel is unlike anything at lower carbon levels: crisp, immediate, and explosive.
Best for: Advanced and elite players with established technique who compete at county, regional, or national level.
Does Higher Carbon Always Mean Better?
No — and this is one of the most common misconceptions in hockey. A high-carbon stick in the hands of a player without the technique to use it effectively will actually perform worse than a mid-carbon stick. The stiffness that makes a 95% carbon stick so powerful for an elite player makes it harder to control and less comfortable for a developing player. The best stick is the one that matches your current level, not the most expensive one on the shelf.
As a general rule: if you're not yet hitting the ball cleanly and consistently, a lower-carbon stick will help you develop better technique. Once your fundamentals are solid, stepping up to a higher-carbon model will unlock more power and feel.
Carbon Content and Bow Profile — Two Different Things
It's worth noting that carbon content and bow profile are separate specifications that both affect how a stick plays. Carbon content determines stiffness and power transfer; bow profile (the curve of the stick) determines how easy it is to execute aerials, drag flicks, and 3D skills. A stick can have high carbon and a low bow, or low carbon and a high bow — they're independent variables. When choosing a stick, it's worth thinking about both. Other Materials: Fibreglass, Aramid, and Resin
The remaining percentage of a stick's construction is typically made up of fibreglass, aramid (Kevlar), and resin. Fibreglass adds flex and durability — it's what gives lower-carbon sticks their forgiving feel. Aramid (the same material used in bulletproof vests) adds impact resistance and helps dampen vibration, which is why some high-carbon sticks still feel relatively comfortable despite their stiffness. Resin binds everything together and affects the overall weight and feel of the stick. Different brands use different layering techniques and resin systems, which is why two sticks with the same carbon percentage can feel quite different in the hand.
