Which Grip Type Should I Choose?

• Chamois — Soft, absorbent leather-feel grip. Excellent sweat absorption and a natural feel. Popular with players who prefer a traditional touch.
• Towelling — Thick, cushioned grip with maximum sweat absorption. Good for players who grip the stick tightly or play in wet conditions.
• Synthetic / PU — Firm, tacky grip with a consistent feel. Durable and low-maintenance. Popular with players who want a precise, responsive feel.

Chamois Alone or Layered?

A common question from players is whether chamois can replace the factory grip or whether it works better on top of it. Both approaches work — the right choice depends on feel preference, hand size, and how often you re-grip.

• Chamois alone (over bare shaft) — Gives the thinnest possible handle diameter and the most direct feel. The grip sits close to the carbon, which suits players who want maximum feedback on the ball. Sweat is absorbed directly into the chamois, so it stays manageable even in warm conditions. Care is straightforward: air-dry after use and replace when the surface feels hard or loses its suppleness.
• Chamois over factory grip — The standard factory grip adds a base layer of cushioning before the chamois goes on, making the handle slightly thicker and softer underhand. Many players find this more comfortable for prolonged play or if they have larger hands. In wet conditions the double layer can hold more moisture, so you may need to replace the chamois a little more frequently.
• Chamois over an overgrip — Less common, but some players use a thin PU overgrip as a base before applying chamois. This gives a firmer, tackier underlayer and can extend the life of the chamois by reducing direct contact wear.

In wet conditions chamois tends to remain grippy when damp, which is one reason it stays popular in UK club hockey. It is not waterproof — prolonged rain will saturate it — but a quick wring or dry-off between stoppages usually restores enough feel to keep playing comfortably.
