Hockey Goalkeeper Kit Guide — What Do You Need?
Share
Goalkeeping is the most specialised position in field hockey — and the kit reflects that. A goalkeeper needs significantly more protection than an outfield player, and the range of equipment can be overwhelming if you're new to the position. Here's a complete breakdown of what you need and what to look for.
The Essential GK Kit List
Helmet
Non-negotiable. A hockey goalkeeper helmet must meet the relevant safety standard (EN 13546 in the UK/Europe). Look for a helmet with a full cage or grille, good ventilation, and a secure fit. Junior helmets are available for younger goalkeepers.
Body Armour (Chest & Arm Protection)
Goalkeeper body armour covers the chest, shoulders and arms. It needs to absorb the impact of a penalty corner drag flick — which can travel at over 100mph at elite level. Look for hard-shell protection over the chest and shoulders with articulated arm guards for mobility.
Kickers
Kickers fit over your boots and protect your feet while allowing you to kick the ball. They come in foam and hard-shell versions. Hard-shell kickers offer more protection and are standard at club level and above. Make sure they fit securely over your boots — loose kickers will affect your footwork.
Legguards (Pads)
Goalkeeper legguards protect the shin and knee. They're wider than outfield shin pads to give the goalkeeper a larger blocking surface. Look for legguards that allow a full range of movement in the knee — you'll be going down to the ground regularly.
Smock
A goalkeeper smock is a padded upper body garment worn over the body armour. It provides additional protection and gives the goalkeeper a larger blocking surface. Most smocks are brightly coloured to help the goalkeeper stand out.
Gloves
GK gloves are different from outfield gloves — they're larger, more padded, and designed to block shots rather than grip a stick. You'll need a right-hand glove (for blocking) and a left-hand glove (for stick control).
GK Sets vs Individual Pieces
If you're just starting out in goal, a goalkeeping set is the most cost-effective way to get fully kitted out. Sets typically include kickers, legguards, body armour and a smock — everything except the helmet and gloves. Individual pieces give you more flexibility to mix and match brands and protection levels as you develop.
