Finding the Right Senior Hockey Stick
Choosing a senior hockey stick is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a player. The right stick can transform your game — improving your control, power, and confidence on the pitch. With so many options from brands like Grays, Y1, Kookaburra and Mercian, it can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks it down simply.
1. Bow Profile — The Shape of the Stick
The bow is the curve along the length of the stick. It's the single biggest factor in how a stick plays.
- Low bow (hook position 200–250mm from the base): Designed for drag flickers and 3D skills. Preferred by forwards and attacking midfielders. Gives maximum lift and power on aerial balls.
- Mid bow (hook position 250–300mm): The most versatile option. Suits all-round players who want a balance of control and power. Great for midfielders.
- Regular/high bow: More traditional feel. Better for defenders and beginners who prioritise control and flat hitting over aerial skills.
2. Composition — Carbon, Fibreglass, and Aramid
The materials in a stick determine its stiffness, power transfer, and feel.
- High carbon (80–100%): Maximum power and stiffness. Used by elite players. Less forgiving on mishits. Best for experienced players with good technique.
- Mid carbon (40–70%): A good balance of power and feel. Suits club and county-level players.
- Low carbon / fibreglass: More flexible and forgiving. Ideal for developing players or those returning from injury.
- Aramid/Kevlar: Added for vibration dampening and durability. Often found in premium sticks alongside high carbon.
3. Weight
Most senior sticks range from 535g to 560g. Lighter sticks (535–545g) suit players who prioritise speed and stick skills. Heavier sticks (550–560g) suit players who want more power in hitting and pushing.
4. Stick Length
For most adults, a 36.5" stick is standard. Taller players (over 6ft) may prefer 37.5". Shorter players or those who prefer a more upright playing style sometimes opt for 36".
5. Position Guide
- Goalkeeper: Specialist GK sticks with reinforced heads
- Defender: Regular or mid bow, mid-high carbon for powerful hitting
- Midfielder: Mid bow, versatile carbon content
- Forward/Attacker: Low bow, high carbon for drag flicks and aerial skills
